SMS For Education

Students are one of the primary groups of people who send text messages, teenagers in particular have mastered the art of typing messages in abbreviated "text talk" very quickly, achieving an efficient, private form of communication with their peers. Additionally the number of teenagers owning mobile phones has dramatically risen in recent years; approximately 90% of students in further and higher education in the UK own a handset. The boom is due to technological advances, more affordable tariffs and more public exposure to phones. All this means text messages are the perfect platform for sending out informative messages regarding students' education, cheaply and effectively.

The benefits of incorporating SMS into school life are impressive, possible uses include class cancellation notification, private disclosure of results, announcements (e.g. school, students union, extra curriculum) as well as promotional options. Further more, schools would be able to offer extended support to students, with 2 way SMS technology, students can reply to messages sent to them, which is delivered to the schools inbox. This private form of communication could be used to crack down on problems facing students both in school, i.e. bullying, and out of school, i.e. problems at home.

Whilst the long term health effects of mobile phone usage are still uncertain, in particular with children, SMS is a much safer alternative for parents concerned about radiation levels emitted from phones during calls. As more students opt for phones packed with the latest technology, mobile phone crime should start to diminish due to higher security, mobile phone tracking and the networks ability to bar phones within 24 hours.

Properly managed SMS will work extremely well in schools, it would effectively make use of modern technology and take school communication into the 21st century. SMS excels in bulk, group messaging, as well as one on one contact. Students can talk privately about personal issues, in their own time, which could have previously been difficult and off putting. With the ability to track messages, schools can monitor exactly when students receive messages which doubles up as an audit system.

If you are thinking of implementing SMS in an academic establishment or elsewhere, PageOne offers a number of ways to send text messages from your desktop, or seamlessly integrate with an existing system or piece of software. With advanced solutions such as 2 way SMS, GSM mobile and UK paging capabilities and much more, PageOne can handle all your SMS communications needs.

Using Text Messaging

Currently, on Broadway, there is a magnificent show, "Spring Awakening" that has won 8 Tony Awards, and praise from all critics and theatergoers. But the really big story is about the text message promotion that is listed in the Playbill. The flier says, "Win Your Chance to Come Backstage!" and instructs theatergoers to send the text message "bdway spring" to a five digit short code during intermission.

The winner, selected at random, is sent a message in return after the show. The winner not only gets to go backstage to meet the cast, but carries with them free PR for the life of their cell phone. Upon registering, texters receive a ring tone from a popular song in the show, and a picture from the show to use as wallpaper on their phones. Both of these, producers think, are unique conversation starters, that will serve as self-perpetuating promotion and ultimately, ticket sales. In December 2006, there were 18.7 billion text messages sent in the US. This is nearly double the rate of 9.7 billion from the same time the previous year.

This is persuasive data, but theater promoters have been wary, taking into account the horribly disruptive sound of a ringing cell phone during a performance. "Spring Awakening" however, has the age-appropriate audience for such a promotion. The show itself is about the struggles of adolescent life and the ambiguous messages that this generation is sent by parents and by society. Thus far, participation in the promotion has resulted in about 8.5 percent of audiences who have sent text messages in the 14 times the promotion has run. Upon registering, texters receive a ring tone from a popular song in the show, and a picture from the show to use as wallpaper on their phones. Both of these, producers think, are unique conversation starters, that will serve as self-perpetuating promotion and ultimately, ticket sales. Taking into account the astounding number of text messages sent in the US, promoters see this number increasingly steadily. The Blue Man Group, a theatrical production featuring a rock oriented musical show, has also used text messaging to promote their latest tour.

The results have shown 16 percent of their audience members sent text messages in response. That figure looks much larger when you consider the group toured 60 cities, in 90 days. It works out to about 50,000 people sending a text message who attended the show, and who know how Blue Man Group somehow represented on their mobile phone. Ringing during performances has not been a problem at this point, but it is definitely something that producers are keeping in mind. Upon registering, texters receive a ring tone from a popular song in the show, and a picture from the show to use as wallpaper on their phones. Both of these, producers think, are unique conversation starters, that will serve as self-perpetuating promotion and ultimately, ticket sales. However from a marketing standpoint, the risk, they think, is worth taking.
